Post Doctoral opportunities at Japan

THE MATSUMAE INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION 2010 FELLOWSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT APPLICABLE FOR THE PERIOD OF APRIL 2010 THROUGH MARCH 2011 DEADLINE: AUGUST 31, 2009

The Matsumae International Foundation is a nongovernmental organization. Its Fund is solely based on donations from many Japanese people who have responded with goodwill to Dr. Shigeyoshi Matsumae's call.

While many donations have been kindly offered by enterprises and groups, most of the donors are individuals who are sympathetic with the Founder's ideals, and maintain contributions to the Fund from their limited incomes.


Successful applicants are urged to seriously consider and understand the goodwill of those persons, and ensure that the provided fellowships are utilized effectively.


I. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants of non-Japanese nationality who meet all of the following eligibility requirements are invited to submit the required application documents.
1. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. (Doctorate) degree, or be recognized by the Matsumae International Foundation as possessing equivalent academic qualifications.
2. Applicants must be under 41 years of age at the time of application.
3. Applicants must have sufficient conversational ability in English or Japanese to prevent insurmountable difficulties during their research activities in Japan.
4. Applicants who have never been in Japan in the past and /or at present.
5. Applicants should have firm positions and professions in their home countries, and should return to their countries on completion of their fellowship stay by the Foundation.
6. Applicants who have previously been invited by the Foundation are not eligible for this fellowship program.
7. Applicants must be of sound health and not physically handicapped in any way which would not prevent from carrying out research in Japan.


II. FIELDS OF STUDY
Fields of study such as natural science, engineering and medicine are given first priority.


III. PERIOD & NUMBER OF FELLOWSHIPS
At the time of application, please indicate the length of your stay (between 3 to 6 months)
from April 2010 to March 2011. The Foundation prefers long stays (such as six months) to
shorter (such as three months). The number of fellowships given is about 20.


IV. APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Applicants should obtain the current issue of the Fellowship Announcement from the Foundation. To obtain the announcement, write to MIF with name and address by postal mail, or by E-mail. Or, download the announcement in PDF-format file from the webpage of the Foundation and print out the Application Form.

The Foundation cannot entertain requests for waivers of the eligibility requirements and other conditions, listed in the Fellowship Announcement, and will not respond to such requests.
Application must be submitted from the applicant's home country. Under no
circumstances will an application be accepted from a person already in Japan.

The Foundation never receives applications by Fax or E-Mail.

Applications must be received by the Foundation by August 31, 2009, at the latest.

Nanotechnology Master at UCL

The MSc in Nanotechnology is designed for graduates from the physical sciences and from relevant engineering disciplines who wish to enter this new and exciting arena, either as industrial researchers, technical managers or academic researchers.Nanotechnology is rapidly establishing itself as a key technology, in industries ranging from microelectronics to health care, with a consequent demand for appropriately trained graduates. The MSc in Nanotechnology is run in conjunction with the department of Physics and Astronomy and the London Centre for Nanotechnology.

The programme consists of taught courses (60%) and a research project with dissertation (40%).


NANOTECHNOLOGY
The London Centre for Nanotechnology, LCN, is a new UK based multidisciplinary enterprise operating at the forefront of science and technology. Structured to form the bridge between the physical and biomedical sciences, it brings together two of the world’s leading institutions in Nanotechnology, namely University College London (UCL) and Imperial College London.

A mission of the LCN is to provide leading edge training in nanotechnology to the workforce and help educate the public. A new £14 million research building has just been completed on the UCL site, furnished with £10 million state of the art equipment, and a £1m teaching facility is in the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering.

Doctoral training in Social Sciences at Germany

The Graduate Center of Economic and Social Research at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin) welcomes applications from highly qualified postgraduated students from all over the world to attend its structured doctoral training program in economics and social sciences.

Applicants must hold a MA degree or a diploma in economics, business and administration or social sciences in order to apply. Degrees from other related fields (such as civil engineering or statistics) also fulfil the admission requirements of the program. Students with a degree in economics follow the economic track that leads to a PhD in economics; students with a degree in sociology follow a social science track which leads to a PhD in sociology. There is a number of core courses that both groups of students will attend.

The German Institute of Economic Research DIW Berlin is one of the leading economic research institutes in Germany. We are an independent, non-profit institute involved in economic research, service and policy advice. We co-operate closely with universities in Berlin and Brandenburg and in international academic networks.

The goal of Graduate Center's activities is to provide young, outstanding doctoral students with a research environment and a training structure that will develop their talents in an accordingly exemplary manner. It leads them to a deep understanding of economic and social processes and offers them the opportunity to apply their knowledge within the professional research environment of one of the leading economic think tanks in Germany. The 3-year program follows a dual training approach.

It offers high-level core and field courses in the first year one research internship in Berlin
a three month stay in Washington DC including advanced courses by US-based scholars and research activities at international renowned think tanks on-the-job training within research projects of the DIW Berlin in the 2. and 3. year.

After successfully finishing the programme students have submitted a number of papers to refereed scientific journals. They will receive a certificate confirming participation together with a doctoral degree.

The Graduate Center offers a scholarship of 1000 per month in the first year to each doctoral student admitted. After successful completion of the first year the doctoral students are assigned to the research departments of the Institute. Research positions are offered depending on the volume of research projects under work.
