PhD Scholarship in Floricultural Sciences at University of Queensland

The Centre for Native Floriculture (CNF) is based at the University of Queensland’s Gatton Campus within the School of Land, Crop and Food Sciences. The CNF’s research is focused on identifying and developing new floricultural products. The project focus is on Betalain pigments which are only found in a small number of plant species.

The aims are to understand the roles that these pigments play in responding to environmental stresses, and to clone novel pigment synthesis genes for the future modification of flower and foliage colour in ornamental plants. Applicants are required to have a first class or high 2A honours degree, or equivalent, in plant biology, preferably with a background in plant molecular biology, biochemistry or physiology. MoU between NUST's EME and Nokia Siemens

The College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (EM&E) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nokia Siemens Networks to provide its students with industry exposure and insights into the latest in telecom technologies. The association is in line with Nokia Siemens Networks commitment to contribute to development of higher technical education in the country and sets a precedent for many such similar tie-ups. Commenting on the partnership, Commandant of College of EM&E, Major General Shahid, said, Against the back drop of a rapidly growing telecom sector, it is important to supplement our curriculum with sessions conducted by experts in the field - this is the best way to bring our students up to speed with the industry they will enter in the next few years.

He said: Nokia Siemens Networks is not only one of the market leaders today but also a company committed to evolve and expand the reach of telecommunications as it currently stands. We believe the collaboration and the delivery model developed and offered by them holds great potential for our students.

Under the scope of the new partnership, senior managers from Nokia Siemens Networks
will conduct lectures for the Electrical and Computer Engineering students of EM&E College. In addition to offering a scholarship program to two selected students, Nokia Siemens Networks will also provide internship opportunities to two students per semester, imparting to them valuable hands-on experience.

A total of five in-class modules, of which four will be in mobile networks and one in fixed networks will be provided as part of the program. The four Mobile Network modules will include Mobile Networks Today, Evolution towards 3G, Future of Mobile Networks, Implementation, Project Management & Network Care.

The Fixed Networks module will include topics like Evolution from PSTN to Next Generation Networks and Broadband Access, Transmission & IP Core. An additional module will be based on a visit to the Nokia Siemens Networks Telecoms Expertise facility at Islamabad.

All these module sets will be delivered within the span of one semester. EM&E students will also benefit from the three Web Based Training modules that Nokia Siemens Networks will install on the universitys platform & these modules will be accessible via the internet.

MEXT scholarships awarded to Pakistani students

ISLAMABAD—The Government of Japan has awarded MEXT research scholarships for the year 2009 to 11 postgraduate Pakistani students aiming to provide them an opportunity to pursue higher studies in their respective fields of study in Japanese Universities. This fully funded scholarships program is designed to contribute to the long-term development needs of Pakistan for promoting good governance, economic growth and human development, said a press release issued here Friday.

The scholarship grantees have been selected by the Embassy of Japan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT) in collaboration with the MEXT Alumni Association of Pakistan (MAAP).

Chihiro Atsumi, the Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, hosted a reception here in honor of the scholarship grantees. The alumni of the scholarship programme were also invited to exchange views and share their knowledge with the fresh scholarship grantees. Addressing on the occasion, the Japanese Ambassador asked the students to prepare for the changes they would encounter in Japan.

He also expressed the hope that the students would come back to Pakistan and work towards the betterment of Pakistan-Japan relations with the knowledge and expertise which they would have obtained in Japan. Over 100 MEXT research scholarship students have successfully returned to Pakistan after obtaining their PhD /Masters degrees in Japan.

They are actively working in various fields, making a significant contribution to the Japan-Pakistan relationship by different means.
