PhD Studentship at School of Clinical and Laboratory Sciences, University of Manchester
The School of Clinical and Laboratory Sciences invites applications for a distinguished 3-year Research into Ageing PhD studentship commencing in October 2009. Funding will provide full support for the UK/EU tuition fee, a tax-free annual stipend of £14, 500 and generous travel allowance.
The primary objective of this project is to identify proteins essential for biofilm development with a view to recognizing novel targets for biofilm inhibition in relation to urinary incontinence.
Urinary incontinence, a condition largely associated with older patients, is generally managed in hospitals and care homes using indwelling catheters.
Unfortunately the catheter is a hazard to the very patients it is designed to treat. The urine of virtually all catheterised patients is persistently colonized with multiple species of microorganisms and around 50% will develop gram-negative bacteraemia. Long-term use of the urinary catheter is also the most likely source of urosepsis in patients over 60 years of age.
The vast majority of infections result from bacterial biofilm formation on the surfaces of the catheter. Biofilms are structured, multicellular layers that constitute a protected growth mode to facilitate survival in hostile environments. Their production offers increased resistance to host defences and general antimicrobials. As a result persistent painful urinary tract infections are common, particularly in older patients. Together with the increase in antibiotic resistant bacteria, it is, therefore, desirable for future treatments to move away from the use of antibiotics and towards the use of specific inhibitors of functions vital to biofilm formation. As part of our ongoing research to develop novel catheter coating that release such inhibitors this project aims to identify proteins critical to biofilm formation that can be targeted for inhibition.
The successful applicant will develop a wide variety of techniques particularly those associated with molecular biology, proteomics and microbiology. He/she will also develop techniques associated with biomaterial synthesis particularly those derived from cross-linked poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate or glycerol methacrylate as these will be used for the substrata for biofilm formation.
Upon completion of the project, the candidate will be ideally placed to progress into a post-doctoral position in either the physical or biological sciences or indeed at the interface between the two.
Applications are welcomed from candidates holding, or expecting to obtain, a first or upper second-class honours degree in a relevant subject such as biochemistry, chemistry, chemical biology and biomedical sciences.
Interested candidates should submit a CV and detailed covering letter outlining their suitability for the project to Dr Michelle Webb at michelle.webb@manchester.ac.uk.
Contact details for two academic or professional referees should also be provided.
Applications will be welcomed up to and including Monday 16 February 2009.
For further details on the study or to confirm your suitability please contact
Dr Webb at the above address.

PhD position in Biostatistics at University of Bern, Switzerland
The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Bern is one of five medical faculties in Switzerland. The Faculty’s Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM) employs some 100 staff and provides undergraduate and post-graduate education and carries out research in a range of disciplines relevant to Public Health. ISPM offers a lively, interdisciplinary environment with excellent computing and library facilities. With its mediaeval architecture, the Swiss capital city of Bern is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which offers excellent quality of life in the proximity of the Alps.
An opening for a PhD position in biostatistics / epidemiology (childhood asthma) is available from 1st March 2009, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. Childhood wheezing disorders (including childhood asthma) are the most common chronic health problem in childhood. Yet, the factors that determine if a child gets asthma, and if it grows out of it or develops chronic disease, are poorly known. This PhD project will focus on the prediction of onset and persistence of childhood wheezing disorders, using data from large population-based cohort studies
Specifically the applicant will:
* Perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the existing literature on predictors of onset and persistence of wheeze and asthma.
* Explore, apply and compare the performance of the methods (e.g. logistic regression, classification and regression trees, and artificial neural networks) in predicting onset and persistence of asthma in children.
* Develop prognostic tools for use in clinical practice.
* Prepare graphs and tables based on the analysis, write statistical reports and scientific papers.
* Present results at national and international conferences.
* Travel to England 2-3 times per year for meetings with collaborators.
* Participate in general tasks relating to the management of the Leicester cohort studies (database creation and maintenance, logistics of ongoing and future surveys, data cleaning, grant applications).
We are seeking a PhD candidate with a strong background in applied statistics and with an interest in clinical epidemiology or public health. Candidates with a degree in statistics, mathematics, medicine or natural sciences are welcome to apply.
The ideal candidate will be a motivated graduate student (diploma or master degree) with good skills in statistical programming (R or Matlab) combined with an interest in applied health related research.
Experience in the use of standard statistical software such as Stata or SAS, in writing scientific papers and reports and in presenting results would be advantageous. The ability to maintain clear documentation is essential. Languages: excellent knowledge of English and either German or French.
The appointment is available from March 2009 for 3 years. The salary of the PhD position is based on the salary scale of the Swiss National Science Foundation. More detailed information on the position can be obtained from Claudia Kuehni.
Please send your applications including curriculum vitae as soon as possible, but not later than February 15, 2009 to:

PhD Scholarships at Berlin
Berlin-Scholarships by the Foundation "Remembrance, Responsibility and Future"
For the academic year 2009/2010 Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin once again announces 30 "Berlin Scholarships" with the support of the Foundation "Remembrance, Responsibility and Future".
The international program "Berlin Scholarships" allows students to study for one year at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin or at one of its partner institutions: Freie Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, Universität der Künste Berlin, and Fachhochschule für Wirtschaft Berlin. Along with their studies in Berlin the scholarship holders will work in groups together on a project with the topic "Excluded and Persecuted: Finding Responses to the Experiences in 20th Century Europe".
Scholarship holders will have the opportunity to carry out their study proposals by attending courses at one of the five partner institutions in Berlin. International applicants’ study proposals should be developed according to their home university’s academic requirements. Students born or raised in Germany will simply continue their regular studies in Berlin.
The program begins on September 1, 2009 and ends on July 31, 2010.
Application deadline: January 31, 2009 (receipt stamp at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin).
Annual Topic
Excluded and Persecuted: Responses to the Experiences in 20th Century Europe
The 20th century was marked by periods of violence and injustice caused by the exclusion and persecution of various political, religious, and ethnical groups. While applicable to dictatorships in other European countries, this is particularly true for the period of National Socialism in Germany during which the domestic process of exclusion and persecution was universalized with the beginning of World War II in 1939.
The project is centered around the question of how we are to deal with this kind of historical injustice today. To what extent do current legislation, educational systems, national or international conventions and acts of public remembering reflect these experiences of tyranny? How relevant are the experiences of the past to anti-discriminatory organization? How do artists reflect historical injustice and what are the conclusions they draw from their work? And which questions still remain unanswered? The goal of the project is to critically look at historical research, political debates, art and literature to see how much has been learned from the past.
Application Requirements
The program is directed at students from all fields of study, who have a special interest in the history of National Socialism. We strongly encourage descendants of victims of forced labor and other victims of the National Socialist regime to apply. Additionally, applicants should have an excellent student record, a good command of German, and should be involved in societal engagements.
All international students, particularly from Eastern European countries, the CIS states, Israel and the United States may apply. For the first time, the program will also be open to students born or raised in Germany, who are already enrolled at one of the five Berlin partner institutions.
Along with their applications, applications are asked to submit first ideas and suggestions for the project work emphasizing their interest in the annual topic. Projects will be worked on together in small groups. Based on common interests and students’ initial ideas, project groups will be defined at the beginning of the semester within the framework of the project seminar.
The scholarship covers a one-year study enrollment, a monthly stipend of 700 Euros for the duration of 11 months, and an accompanying program of social and cultural activities throughout the year.
International students in addition receive a subsidy towards travel expenses. Also an intensive German language course introducing German culture and society will be held prior to the beginning of the winter semester.
Foundation "Remembrance, Responsibility and Future"
The Foundation "Remembrance, Responsibility and Future" is an expression of the responsibility of the state, industry and society to continue to confront National Socialist injustice and to work for understanding between peoples. PhD Studentship in Department of Aerospace Engineering, University of Glasgow
The Space Advanced Research Team at the University of Glasgow is currently seeking a PhD student to investigate the "Design and Mission Analysis of Femtosatellites"
The project consists of the design and development of femto-satellites with a volume of 1 cm x 1 cm x 1 cm and a weight of approximately 10 grams. These very tiny satellites are expected to be mainly made of stacked silicon microchips. Some microchips will be responsible for very specific tasks necessary for the survival of the mission (for example, communication, attitude control, etc.), whereas other microchips will form the scientific payload (for example, embedded microcameras, radiation detectors, etc.) These femto-satellites have the potential to drastically lower the costs of space missions and increase the frequency of the launches.
Furthermore, the possibility of having a huge number of femto-satellites (more than 1,000) at a reasonable manufacturing price (less than £200 each) will increase the overall mission reliability (losing some of them will not jeopardize the overall mission objectives). It will also allow the conception of new mission scenarios and the assembly of large structures in space consisting of thousands of small elements (for example, interferometric antenna arrays, synthetic aperture radars, etc.) The doctoral student selected for this project will have to take into account not only the design trade-offs of present microelectronic technology, but also the mission design and analysis trade-offs applicable to space applications. In this process, it is expected that the doctoral student will be able to produce some advances in the state-of-the-art of this interdisciplinary field of research since the present design rules of small satellites cannot be directly applied to the design and development of femto-satellites due to the severe constraints in size and power consumption.
The PhD candidate for this post will hold an upper 1st class degree in either aerospace engineering or electrical & electronics engineering. The successful applicant will have good analytical and modelling skills, and good knowledge of microprocessors and/or space mission analysis and design. Enthusiasm and determination in exploring original ideas as well as good team spirit are desirable qualities of the successful candidate. A very good spoken and written English is essential.
Each Scholarship will run for 4 years, cover all tuition fees (EU or overseas) and provide the successful student with a stipend at the Research Council recommended rates (£12,940 for 2008/09). On top of this the project benefits from £5,300 per year research costs.
The project will start between January 2009 and April 2009.
In the first instance the documentation submitted by the applicant will include a cover letter detailing why you wish to be considered for the post and how your skills fit the proposed research, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications and the name and address of two referees willing to submit a confidential reference.
Informal enquiries and applications should be sent to Dr Gianmarco Radice, Department of Aerospace Engineering, University of Glasgow, Glasgow, G12 8QQ, UK. Tel: +44-(0)141-3304068. Email: gradice@aero.gla.ac.uk
Note that unsuccessful but nevertheless outstanding candidates may be considered for other scholarships with a start date of October 2009.

PhD position in Ecology at University of Antwerp, Belgium
The university is seeking to fill the full time vacancy (m/f) at the Department of Biology of the Faculty of Sciences.
Preference goes to a candidate with a keen interest for evolution, behaviour and ecology. Research topic is the study of the causes and consequences of coexistence of multiple discrete female damselfly (Insecta: Odonata) morphs (with genetic base). Intriguingly, one female morph much resembles the conspecific males phenotype to such extent that intraspecific mimicry in the context of sexual conflict has been suggested. Several studies indicate frequency-and density-dependent selection. Broad aim of the PhD research is study of causes and consequences of variation in social environments (densities and frequencies of males and female morphs) on the success, behaviour and phenotype of males and females. Fieldwork is planned at several locations in Europe (such as Belgium, Netherlands, Spain). It also is expected for the candidate to take part in a limited amount of teaching assistance.
Requirements
* Degree in Biology (also students that finish later this term are encouraged to apply).
* Preparing a PhD. The job offer is for two years, while typically 4 years are required to complete a PhD in Belgium. Therefore, the candidate will need to apply for additional funding for which several possibilities are available (e.g.; http://www.fwo.be, http://www.iwt.be).
