Netherland's Huygens Scholarship Programme

The prestigious Huygens Scholarship Programme is open to excellent students from all countries. It is aimed at talented students who want to come to the Netherlands in the final phase of their bachelor’s studies or during their master’s studies.

The Huygens Scholarship Programme is highly competitive. To illustrate this: for the 2011 scholarship round it is expected that out of approximately 1,700 applications only 150 candidates will be awarded a scholarship.

Eligibility requirements

-If you want to take part in the Huygens Scholarship Programme, you must meet the following requirements:

-You are an excellent student: you have obtained excellent results in all your previous studies and you are at least in the top 5% of students in your study or research programme.

Please show this in your application file by including, for example, grade lists or reference letters. In case of equivalent qualification preference will be given to applications which show that you are among the top 5%.

-The Dutch study programme should be registered in CROHO, the Central Register of Higher Education Programmes. You can find this information in the Dutch nomination letter provided by the Dutch host institution.

-You should be in the final phase of your bachelor’s studies, or studying towards a master’s degree in the Netherlands, and your study must be used to earn a degree at the Dutch institution.

-Scholarships are only awarded for studies lasting at least 6 months, but no longer than 24 months. In case of equivalent qualification preference will be given to applications for 12 to 24 months.

-Your studies or research in the Netherlands must constitute a deepening and broadening of your previous studies.

-If you are already a graduate, you must have graduated less than one year ago.

-It is possible to do research or practical training, but it must form part of your studies (a programme on the CROHO list), i.e. you must receive study credits for it. In case of equivalent qualification preference will be given to applications for study programmes.

-At the start of the academic year (1 September) in which you study in the Netherlands, you must be no older than 35 years of age. In case of equivalent qualification preference will be given to a younger candidate.

-You must have already attended a programme of education (e.g. high school or above) in a country outside the Netherlands.

Application procedure

When you apply for admission to a programme in the Netherlands, you should indicate that your study performance is excellent and that you wish to be nominated for the prestigious Huygens Scholarship Programme by the Dutch institution you would like to study at.

Closing date

The complete application, both the digital application form and application documents on paper, must be received by Nuffic before 1 February. Applications which have not been submitted both digitally and on paper or which are incomplete will not be accepted.

Make sure you send your complete application to Nuffic well before the abovementioned deadline. Please note that your application must be sent to Nuffic by post or by courier.

Finally, bear in mind that Nuffic is closed on Saturday 29 January on and Sunday 30 January. On these days no post will be delivered.

Post-graduate Scholarships at University of Amsterdam

The Univeristy of Amsterdam aims to attract the world's brightest students to its international classrooms. As from September 2007, outstanding students from outside the European Economic Area can apply for an Amsterdam Merit Scholarship.

The Amsterdam Merit Scholarships (AMS) have specifically been designed by the Universiteit van Amsterdam to offer talented and hard-working non-EU/EEA students the opportunity to pursue a degree in one of the academic fields covered by the UvA. The AMS programme is highly selective: only applicants with excellent study results and motivation may receive a scholarship.

Eligibility
Applicants to one of the English-taught, selective Master's programmes of the Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS) must meet the eligibility criteria in order to be considered for the AMS scholarship.

The applicant should:
hold non-EEA nationality or nationalities only
not be entitled to receive a Dutch study grant or loan ("Studiefinanciering")
not be eligible to pay the reduced tuition fee rate for EEA students at the UvA
not receive a full coverage scholarship for the same period of study as the AMS scholarship
have submitted a complete application to one of the English-taught, selective Master’s programmes of the GSSS
have been (or will be) admitted to one of the English-taught, selective Master’s programmes of the GSSS
be enrolled at the time of receipt of the scholarship as a full time student in one of the English-taught, selective Master's programmes offered by the GSSS
be able to comply with the conditions to obtain a Dutch visa (if applicable)
demonstrate a financial need

Failure to meet one or more of these criteria automatically means that the student is not eligible for an AMS scholarship.

Selection criteria
We have a limited number of scholarships. The best eligible candidates are selected for a scholarship on the basis of the following criteria:
Their academic excellence and promise in the proposed field, as evidenced by their academic records, letters of recommendation, written work and/or publications and their proposed research questions;
The quality of their letter of motivation.

How to apply?
Applicants wishing to apply for an AMS scholarship should include their application for the scholarship in their application file for the Master's programme of their choice. Your application for the scholarship should contain the following documents:
Motivation letter for the scholarship
A comprehensive financial plan that shows expected income from all sources and all costs, to provide insight in the additional funds needed from a scholarship in order to finance participation in the Master's programme.
A research proposal, detailing your areas of interest and what you wish to research during your time at the GSSS.

When to apply?
Applications for an AMS scholarship should be submitted before 1 April when enrolling in September. For students wishing to start their studies in February, the deadline is 1 August.
Selection

Only students who have been admitted to one of the English-taught, selective Master's programmes of the GSSS can be awarded a scholarship. Students are selected on the basis of academic merit. Selection will take place in May and again in October. Applicants will be informed before the end of May or October.

The scholarship
The scholarship consists of € 6,000, € 9,000 or € 12,000, but awards are based on the comprehensive financial plan, which should demonstrate the extent of the need for additional funding. Please note that the scholarship cannot be used as a (partial) tuition waiver. The applicant must still pay the full amount of tuition due. Scholarship holders will receive their grant in monthly instalments.

Conditions
Amsterdam Merit Scholarships are only awarded to applicants who have been admitted to one of the English-taught, selective Master's programmes of the GSSS upon enrolment. A scholarship granted for one academic year cannot be transferred to another academic year. Students who are granted an Amsterdam Merit Scholarship are required to assent to the conditions applying to the scholarship in writing before the scholarship will be remitted.

PhD Job at Geotechnology Department at Delft University of Technology

The Geotechnology Department comprises four Sections: Applied Geology, Applied Geophysics and Petrophysics, GeoEngineering, and Petroleum Engineering. Its research activities are strongly interdisciplinary andaimed at the development and dissemination of innovative, integratedgeo-technologies in the fields of subsurface imaging, characterisationand engineering for cost-effective and sustainable utilisation of thesubsurface.

The Section of Applied Geology aims to develop high-resolutionquantitative models of geological heterogeneity in clastic sedimentarybasins on different spatial scales. The models serve to enhance ourunderstanding of clastic sedimentary systems as a whole, and will beapplied in the discovery, use and sustainable management of subsurfaceresources. We strive to reduce the inherent uncertainty in numericalmodelling by developing tools for quantitative prediction of keysubsurface properties such as size, shape, spatial distribution andinternal heterogeneity of sediment bodies.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Geological reservoir models used in hydrocarbon andgroundwater exploitation are typically based on stochastic-geometricinterpolation methods. Such methods generate solutions that are locallyoptimal, but are not constrained by the large-scale geological settingof the reservoir. The aims of this project are
(1) to develop a post-processor for an existing low-resolution, basin-scale process-basedmodel of fluvio-deltaic drainage networks and stratigraphy, which isconditioned to large-scale basin geometry and geological boundaryconditions. The post-processor should generate explicit, object-based,stochastic realizations of the small-scale reservoir architecture (lowand high sinuosity channel belts) to permit analysis of sand-bodyconnectivity, and its controls on fluid flow and mixing of sedimentswith different provenance;
(2) to better characterize subsurfaceheterogeneity and reduce the solution space associated with well datarelative to current (geometric) models;
(3) to test the method byperforming flow simulations on synthetic and real-world reservoirs, inorder to study the dispersal of contaminants in the shallow subsurfaceand propose strategies for groundwater exploitation.

REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should have an MSc degree in Earth Sciences(Geology, Geophysics, Physical Geography) or Engineering (EngineeringGeology, Hydraulic Engineering, Petroleum Engineering). Candidates withdemonstrable expertise in geological or flow modelling and a keeninterest in optimization problems are specifically encouraged to apply.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The successful candidate will be employed byDelft University of Technology for a fixed period of four years withinwhich he/she is expected to write a doctoral thesis.TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexiblework week, free high-speed Internet access from home, and the option ofassembling a customized compensation and benefits package (the ‘IKA’).Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective LabourAgreement for Dutch Universities.

Delft University of Technology strives to increase the number of womenin higher academic positions; women are therefore especially encouragedto apply.

APPLICATION
To apply, please send a detailed CV along with a letter of applicationby 15 April, 2009 to: recruitment-citg@tudelft.nl.
