PhD scholarship(s) in the field of spoken-language comprehension
The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen offers a 3-years cholarship for research leading towards a PhD in the field of spoken-language comprehension.
The successful candidate will develop a dissertation project within the ongoingresearch themes of the Adaptive Listening Group. The Adaptive Listening Group isa newly established independent research group under the direction of Dr. AndreaWeber and investigates the processing of foreign-accented speech. Theinstitute's website provides more information about the group. With respect tothe research project, a topic concerning the processing of variation in speechor experiential influences on perception is currently of most interest to thegroup, but other topics that fall in the scope of the group are possible aswell. The research will concern language perception by adults, but may involve avariety of methodological approaches, including cross-linguistic comparisons,the use of eyetracking and neuroimaging techniques, or computational modeling.Candidates with a background in experimental psycholinguistics or experimentalphonetics may receive preference.
Good command of English is required.

National ICT Scholarship Program 2009
National ICT R&D Fund is offering fully funded scholarships for talented students from rural/non-metropolitan areas of Pakistan. The National ICT Scholarship Program 2009 (NICTSP 2009) will provide fully funded 4 year undergraduate scholarships in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) related disciplines in the Top ICT universities of Pakistan.
Students will be required to appear for a customized MCQ based aptitude test. They will also need to qualify for university admission tests to earn this scholarship.
This program will be run with the financial collaboration of Public Sector Development Program (PSDP).

Worldwide - 2009 / 2010 OFID Scholarship Award
OFID (The OPEC Fund for International Development) is pleased to announce that qualified undergraduate students are welcome to apply for the OFID Scholarship 2009/10. The OFID Scholarship will be awarded to support an undergraduate student from any developing country, to pursue higher education in a relevant field of development, in any recognized university/college in the world. Through its scholarship scheme, OFID aims to help highly motivated, highly driven individuals overcome one of the biggest challenges to their careers – the cost of advanced professional or graduate training. The winner of the OFID Award will receive a scholarship of up to US$100,000. The funds will be spread over a maximum of two years, toward the completion of a Master’s degree, or its equivalent, at an accredited educational institution, starting in the autumn of the academic year 2009/10.
Eligibility
To be eligible the candidate must meet ALL of the following criteria: :
Must be between the ages of 23-32 at the time of submitting his/her application.
Must be a graduating student with a Baccalaureate from a four-year, accredited college/university, or its equivalent.
Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 rating system, or its equivalent.
Must be matriculated at an accredited university for the upcoming academic year starting September 2009, and must maintain full-time status for the duration of the Masters Degree.
Must be a national of a developing country (please see list of eligible countries)
Must select a subject of study that pertains to OFID’s core mission, such as: economics of development (poverty reduction, energy and sustainable development), environment (desertification), or other related science and technology fields.

Prior to the start of his/her first year studies, the student will be paid a relocation grant, equal to two-month allowance. OFID will also pay for travel costs from the nearest airport to the student’s place of residence, to the nearest airport to the chosen place of study. Upon completion of the studies, the student will be paid the cost of one-way air ticket to his/her home country.

A Pakistani student in Cuba
Junaid Alam, 21, of Pakistan and two friends stood nearby. They said the Cuban government gave them — and 997 other Pakistani students — full scholarships to study medicine after an earthquake devastated their town in 2005.
“After the earthquake, Fidel Castro was the first one to offer scholarships,” Alam said. “We are grateful.”
“I would not have been able to become a doctor without this scholarship,” said Waquar Shad, 21, whose father was killed in the disaster.
But not everyone believes in the revolution.
A few blocks from the Habana Libre, Raul Torres, 30, sells necklaces at a crafts market. He said he plans to join the rest of his family in the U.S. soon because he doesn't believe Cuba's economy will improve.
“I'm crazy about leaving,” he said. “I'm ready to work. I'll do anything. But I've got to get out.”
