Scholarship for PhD at Aarhus University, Denmark

Department of Management at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University, is advertising a PhD fellowship available as at 1 July 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Centre for Design of Global Enterprise (DoGE) at the Department of Management invites applicants for a position as PhD scholar by 1 June. The position is linked to a multidisciplinary research project entitled "Made in Denmark 2050 – The role of firms in globalisation", concerning the export success factors of Danish companies. The research project is carried out in collaboration with the GlobID research centre at the Department of Economics and is funded by The Tuborg Foundation.

The PhD student will be joining an international network of experienced researchers from Economics and International Business Studies, and is expected to partake in large scale data analysis, statistics/econometric investigations as well as in writing of academic articles and communication of research results. A successful applicant must be willing to acquire a basic knowledge of Danish during the early period of the PhD position.
The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate a strong interest and preferably prior knowledge in both applied statistics/micro-econometrics as well as in organizational design and strategy.

PhD students in Denmark work under very favourable terms: They are employed on a full-time basis for three years, and the salary is enough to cover all necessary accommodation and living costs and to lead an active life. A PhD student does not pay university fees.
PhD students at Aarhus School of Business, University of Aarhus (ASB), work under almost the same terms as other research staff, i.e. they have their own office space with a computer, incl. Internet access, email, phone etc., as well as access to secretarial assistance etc. Moreover, expenses in connection with the scientific work are covered, e.g. participation in research courses and academic conferences in Denmark and abroad.
There are also good and well-paid job opportunities in Denmark for people with a PhD degree, both within and outside the university sector.

A PhD student in Denmark must complete an individually planned PhD course programme within the relevant research area and conduct a research project under the supervision of experienced senior researchers. The PhD student is also expected, as part of the programme, to spend some time (up to six months), with coverage of travel and accommodation expenses, at another – often foreign – research institution. During the programme, the PhD student is further expected to gain teaching experience within the subject area as well as experience with other forms of dissemination of research results. ASB also finances participation in relevant PhD courses and scientific conferences. In addition, it is expected that PhD students participate in and contribute to the other activities of the department.

Conditions of employment
The PhD fellowship has duration of three years. Graduates and students expecting to complete their study programme in the near future may apply for the fellowship. The employment is covered by a national collective agreement.

The applications will subsequently be assessed by an expert assessment committee, and applicants will receive the committee’s assessment of the individual application and the response to the application from ASB approx. one month after the expiry of the deadline for application.

The assessment of the application comprises an overall assessment of the applicant and his or her qualifications. Particular weight is attached to the project proposal, the grades obtained by the applicant in the study programme, and to whether the applicant, during the study programme or in another manner, has displayed special skills in writing major papers, e.g. a thesis. PhD Scholarship in Floricultural Sciences at University of Queensland

The Centre for Native Floriculture (CNF) is based at the University of Queensland’s Gatton Campus within the School of Land, Crop and Food Sciences. The CNF’s research is focused on identifying and developing new floricultural products. The project focus is on Betalain pigments which are only found in a small number of plant species.

The aims are to understand the roles that these pigments play in responding to environmental stresses, and to clone novel pigment synthesis genes for the future modification of flower and foliage colour in ornamental plants. Applicants are required to have a first class or high 2A honours degree, or equivalent, in plant biology, preferably with a background in plant molecular biology, biochemistry or physiology. PhD studentships at Bowling Green State University, USA

Two PhD-student research assistantships available

1) Research assistantship available immediately to participate in a NOAA Sea Grant project using otolith chemistry to quantify mixed stock distribution, philopatry, and fisheries exploitation of steelhead trout in Lake Erie. This project involves joint collaboration between Jeff Miner (Aquatic Ecology & Fisheries Laboratory) and John Farver (Geology) in close association with state and federal fisheries biologists and hatchery managers. Two years of research assistantship support are available to a top PhD student.

2) The primary purpose of this project is to identify characteristics necessary to classify reservoirs in terms of natural reproduction for yellow perch and reservoirs that can be stocked
successfully with yellow perch fingerlings from hatcheries (up to three years of support). This project starts this summer and involves multivariate assessment of abiotic and biotic characteristics in Ohio reservoirs, including considerable field work and quantitative
analyses.

Experimental spin-off research is expected by graduate students in both projects.

We seek highly motivated and collaborative individuals who desire to combine fieldwork with lab research involving typical aquatic biology and ecology approaches as well as more specialized analytical chemistry. Desired qualifications include a BS/MS in one of several relevant fields of study (e.g. biology, ecology, fisheries) with coursework in chemistry and statistics, field experience in aquatic or fish ecology, ability to work independently and collaboratively, and comfort applying interdisciplinary approaches to questions in aquatic ecology and fisheries biology. Competitive stipends (including health insurance) with tuition waivers are available. PhD Scholarship in Culture Study at Giessen University, Germany

Giessen University’s International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC), funded by the German federal government’s Excellence Initiative, offers a three-year structured PhD-programme in the study of culture. With its excellent research environment, a doctoral programme which is tailored to the needs of PhD students and the intensive personal support it provides, the Graduate Centre offers postgraduate students optimum conditions for their PhD-projects and a custom-made preparation for the time thereafter, both with regard to academic and non-academic careers.

From 01st October 2009, the GCSC offers up to 9 PhD scholarships.

PhD scholarships include a monthly stipend of approximately €1000 and are offered for one year with the possibility of two extensions, each of a year. Scholarships commence on October 1st, 2009.

Acceptance of a scholarship requires participation in the study programme and the wide-ranging events offered by the GCSC, as well as active involvement in at least one GCSC graduate research group. Scholarship holders must register as PhD students at Justus Liebig University. There are no tuition fees for doctoral students at JLU, except for an enrolment fee of approximately €200 per semester. PhD Studentship in Department of Aerospace Engineering, University of Glasgow

The Space Advanced Research Team at the University of Glasgow is currently seeking a PhD student to investigate the "Design and Mission Analysis of Femtosatellites"

The project consists of the design and development of femto-satellites with a volume of 1 cm x 1 cm x 1 cm and a weight of approximately 10 grams. These very tiny satellites are expected to be mainly made of stacked silicon microchips. Some microchips will be responsible for very specific tasks necessary for the survival of the mission (for example, communication, attitude control, etc.), whereas other microchips will form the scientific payload (for example, embedded microcameras, radiation detectors, etc.) These femto-satellites have the potential to drastically lower the costs of space missions and increase the frequency of the launches.

Furthermore, the possibility of having a huge number of femto-satellites (more than 1,000) at a reasonable manufacturing price (less than £200 each) will increase the overall mission reliability (losing some of them will not jeopardize the overall mission objectives). It will also allow the conception of new mission scenarios and the assembly of large structures in space consisting of thousands of small elements (for example, interferometric antenna arrays, synthetic aperture radars, etc.) The doctoral student selected for this project will have to take into account not only the design trade-offs of present microelectronic technology, but also the mission design and analysis trade-offs applicable to space applications. In this process, it is expected that the doctoral student will be able to produce some advances in the state-of-the-art of this interdisciplinary field of research since the present design rules of small satellites cannot be directly applied to the design and development of femto-satellites due to the severe constraints in size and power consumption.

The PhD candidate for this post will hold an upper 1st class degree in either aerospace engineering or electrical & electronics engineering. The successful applicant will have good analytical and modelling skills, and good knowledge of microprocessors and/or space mission analysis and design. Enthusiasm and determination in exploring original ideas as well as good team spirit are desirable qualities of the successful candidate. A very good spoken and written English is essential.

Each Scholarship will run for 4 years, cover all tuition fees (EU or overseas) and provide the successful student with a stipend at the Research Council recommended rates (£12,940 for 2008/09). On top of this the project benefits from £5,300 per year research costs.
The project will start between January 2009 and April 2009.

Ph.D. position in Computer Science at Karlstad University, Sweden

A Ph.D. position is available within the Distributed Systems and Communications Research Group (DISCO) at the Department of Computer Science at Karlstad University. Research within DISCO is focused on development of transport and application layer protocols, cross-layer interactions and the design of future 4G wireless systems, including Wireless Mesh and AdHoc Networks.

International Graduate scholarships at Tohoku University, Japan

International Graduate Program for Advanced Science (IGPAS) is an interdisciplinary graduate program in the Graduate School of Science, Tohoku University.

PhD Position in Bioorganic Chemistry

A fully funded 36 month PhD position is available to work on “Natural product synthesis and evaluation of antimicrobial activity” as part of the Marie Curie Training Network “Red Cat“ (“Natural Products and related Redox Catalysts: Basic Research and Applications in Medicine and Agriculture”).

PhD scholarship(s) in the field of spoken-language comprehension
The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen offers a 3-years cholarship for research leading towards a PhD in the field of spoken-language comprehension.

The successful candidate will develop a dissertation project within the ongoingresearch themes of the Adaptive Listening Group. The Adaptive Listening Group isa newly established independent research group under the direction of Dr. AndreaWeber and investigates the processing of foreign-accented speech. Theinstitute's website provides more information about the group. With respect tothe research project, a topic concerning the processing of variation in speechor experiential influences on perception is currently of most interest to thegroup, but other topics that fall in the scope of the group are possible aswell. The research will concern language perception by adults, but may involve avariety of methodological approaches, including cross-linguistic comparisons,the use of eyetracking and neuroimaging techniques, or computational modeling.Candidates with a background in experimental psycholinguistics or experimentalphonetics may receive preference.

Good command of English is required.
