Giessen University's International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC), funded by the German federal government's Excellence Initiative, offers a three-year structured PhD-programme in the study of culture.
The GCSC offers up to 9 PhD scholarships and 1 postdoctoral scholarship.
PhD scholarships include a monthly stipend of approximately €1.100 and are offered for one year with the possibility of two extensions, each of a year. The postdoctoral scholarship, with a monthly stipend of about €1.500, is limited to two years.
All scholarships start on 01st October, 2011. Acceptance of a scholarship requires participation in the study programme and the wide-ranging events offered by the GCSC, as well as active involvement in at least one GCSC graduate research group. PhD scholarship holders must register as PhD students at Justus Liebig University. There are no tuition fees for doctoral students at JLU, except for an enrolment fee of approximately €200 per semester. All scholarship holders are expected to take up residency in or near Giessen.
Eligibility
The GCSC invite applications contributing to the study of culture in various historical contexts as well as those analyzing contemporary phenomena The GCSC encourages applications from graduate students who have or expect to obtain a first or upper second class honours M.A.-degree (or equivalent) in one of the GCSC's academic subjects or in the arts/humanities, cultural studies, or social sciences. Candidates applying for a post-doctoral scholarship should hold a PhD in the arts/humanities, cultural studies, or social sciences, have an excellent academic record, and pursue a research project relevant to the GCSC's research areas. Fluency in either English or German is required.
Application Procedure
The main selection criteria are the candidates' academic qualification, the academic quality of the research proposal and the suitability of the project for the GCSC's research programme. Short-listed candidates will be invited to a 30-minute interview; telephone interviews can be arranged for candidates from overseas.
On 24th January 2011, the GCSC will host an Information Day at the Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC), Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, Alter Steinbacher Weg 38, 35394 Giessen. The Information Day gives potential applicants the opportunity to meet the staff and students involved in the doctoral programme. The IMPRS-SurMat covers topics ranging from fundamental scientific issues to engineering applications. This includes topics such as material stability (corrosion and interfacial adhesion), local reactivities on heterogeneous surfaces (corrosion and heterogeneous catalysis), the sophisticated tailoring of surfaces by thin film and nano-structuring techniques, and computational material design and atomistic modelling on interfaces.
The laboratories within the IMPRS-SurMat provide the most modern surface and interface analytical techniques and surface technologies. For theoretical studies high performance computational facilities and cutting edge computational tools are available.
Students holding either an excellent Master’s degree or a “Diplom” in Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Geo-Science or related subjects can apply for admission.

The Ph.D will be part of the FP7 EU project SafeLand in the department "The Atmosphere in the Earth System" and will focus on the investigation of extreme precipitation events. High-resolution simulations, both hydrostatic and non-hydrostatic, will be performed with the regional climate model REMO over different regions in Europe in order to investigate characteristics of extreme rainfall events. Statistical methods of extreme value theory are supposed to be applied to establish links between local dynamical processes and large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns.
The applicant is expected to have an MSc or diploma in mathematics, physics, meteorology, oceanography, geosciences or a related field. A basic knowledge in programming and statistical data analysis is desired. The ability to work efficiently in a team is regarded as essential. There is the possibility to apply for the International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling.
The position is offered for three years. Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions (TVoeD E13/2), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service.

PhD Fellowships in Life Sciences at Hannover Medical School, Germany
Since 2006, the German Research Foundation (DFG) provides funding to Hannover
Medical School (MHH) and the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig to maintain an International Research Training Group (IRTG) together with the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm (coordinators: Sebastian Suerbaum, Hannover, and Birgitta Henriques-Normark, Stockholm). The central aim of the programme is to give young researchers the opportunity to perform their PhD work in the rapidly moving field of the infection biology of human microbial pathogens in a highly stimulating, competitive, international environment. The core element of the IRTG is a joint research programme centering on the question how human microbial pathogens achieve acute or persistent infection and how the host organism reacts to persistent infection. In addition, graduate students will participate in a highly interdisciplinary joint study programme.
Stipends will be 1365 €/month and are available for up to three years. It is an integral part of the programme that PhD students spend 6-12 months in one of the partner labs at the Karolinska Institute.
Candidates who hold the equivalent of a master’s or diploma degree in Biology, Biochemistry or Life Sciences, or who graduated in medicine are welcome to apply. Those applicants who are selected for interviews in a first round of screening will be asked to attend a selection workshop in Hannover to be held June 10 / 11, 2009.

The Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe’ in a Global Context: Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows” at the University of Heidelberg is offering 2 PhD scholarships (2 + 1 years) as well as 2 Post-doctoral scholarships (12 months) within the Research Project C4 “Making India a Global Health Care Destination: A Social Study of High-Tech Hospitals and Neo-Oriental Spas”, Research Area C (Health and Environment).
The candidates are expected to develop PhD or Post-doctoral projects within the Project C4’s research focus: This project addresses the fast growing sector of medical and wellness tourism in India, and attempts to understand the ways by which India is promoted as a global health care destination.
Applicants for the PhD Scholarships are required to hold a Masters degree or equivalent for less than a year. Applicants for the post-doctoral scholarships are required to hold a PhD since no longer than three years. The fellowships are opened to scholars in anthropology, cultural geography and cultural economy. The subject can be explored from the perspectives developed in the social studies of medicine and/or in migration studies. The PhD projects should have their primary focus on biomedical tourism and biomedical health care. The Post-doctoral projects should cover either medical or wellness tourism.
The scholarships will start on 1st June 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter.
