PhD Scholarships at Max Plank Institute for Iron Research (MPIE)

The IMPRS-SurMat represents a unique cooperative effort involving the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research (MPIE) in Duesseldorf, the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research in Muelheim, and the Ruhr University (RUB) in Bochum. In addition, three renowned Chinese research institutions closely cooperate with SurMat.

The IMPRS-SurMat covers topics ranging from fundamental scientific issues to engineering applications. This includes topics such as material stability (corrosion and interfacial adhesion), local reactivities on heterogeneous surfaces (corrosion and heterogeneous catalysis), the sophisticated tailoring of surfaces by thin film and nano-structuring techniques, and computational material design and atomistic modelling on interfaces.

The laboratories within the IMPRS-SurMat provide the most modern surface and interface analytical techniques and surface technologies. For theoretical studies high performance computational facilities and cutting edge computational tools are available.

Students holding either an excellent Master’s degree or a “Diplom” in Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Geo-Science or related subjects can apply for admission.

Seafarers International Research Centre (SIRC) International PhD Scholarships for Developing Countries at Cardiff University, UK

The Seafarers International Research Centre at Cardiff University, with support from The Nippon Foundation, would like to invite applications for a number 4 year scholarships offering exciting opportunities to study for PhD qualifications in maritime-related social science. Based in the UK, these unique fellowships are available to graduates of maritime or social science-related disciplines who have a strong desire to undertake academic research on seafarers and the human related aspects of the maritime sector.

Cardiff University School of Social Sciences is one of the leading centres of social science research in the UK and the Seafarers International Research Centre is internationally recognised for its work on seafarers and seafarer-related issues. Successful candidates will study on a 1-year (ESRC recognised) Social Science Research Methods programme before proceeding to their dissertation. They will have their course fees paid and will receive a generous living/travel allowance.

Applications are welcomed from residents of any country but are particularly encouraged from those living in developing regions, as well as in Asia and Japan. Applicants are expected to hold a good honours degree (usually a 1st or 2.1) in a social science or maritime-related discipline. In addition, all applicants for whom English is a second language will be required to possess a certificate from IELTS with a minimum score of 7 or a TOEFL certificate with a minimum score of 600. Tests of English as a foreign language must have been awarded no more than 2 years prior to the requested entry point to be deemed valid and all tests will be verified by the Academic Registry.

PhD Scholarships at University of Venice, Italy

In 2007, the Department of Economics and the Department of Environmental Sciences of the Università Ca’ Foscari of Venice, in collaboration with the Euro-Mediterranean Center for Climate Change (CMCC), have launched a 3-year PhD Programme in Science and Management of Climate Change.

Every year, up to twelve students are enrolled in this Ph.D. programme. All lectures are given in English by internationally renowned professors.

The PhD Programme is organised into two streams:
Dynamic Climatology at the CMCC Headquarters in Bologna
Climate Change Impact and Management, at the Department of Economics of the University Ca’ Foscari of Venice


For the year 2009/2010 (25th cycle of Italian PhD Programmes) we offer three scholaships with the financial support of the Euro-Mediterranean Center for Climate Change.

Prerequisites
In order to apply, students are required to hold an Italian “Laurea magistrale” or an equivalent foreign university degree (e.g. MSc or DEA). Foreign applicants shall provide full documentation of their university studies, including course profiles. Knowledge of the English language is a necessary prerequisite. Students are required to send proof of their knowledge of English (Toefl, Cambridge Certificate, etc).

Please note: Candidates for the Dynamic Climatology Stream should have a background in mathematics or physics at the BA level. Previous experience with numerical modelling and programming in a UNIX/Linux environment would be desirable, though not essential.The Stream on “Impact and Management of Climate Change” has a multidisciplinary approach and background on Economics or Enviromental Science are preferably. Proficiency in mathematics is requested e.g. integral and differential calculus, linear algebra.

PhD scholarship at DTU, Denmark

A PhD scholarship within the DTU Climate Centre at System Analysis Division, Risø DTU is available from September 2009.

The DTU Climate Centre at Risø conducts and coordinates interdisciplinary climate-related research including measurement and assessment of climate change, adaptation strategies and mitigation of greenhouse gases. The centre cooperates with leading international and Danish universities and research centres and combines research and application-oriented consultancy offered to authorities and the private sector.

The project “Global Modelling and Assessment of Energy- and Climate Change Policies”.

Global climate change emerges from worldwide GHG emissions over century scales, and very large and fast GHG emission reductions in the energy sector are needed in order to avoid dangerous anthropogenic climate change. The PhD project will include the implementation and further development of a global energy economic model and the application of the model to the assessment of technological options and costs of climate policies in different parts of the world. The project will also include a theoretical and applied assessment of international economic climate change policy mechanisms including tradable emission permits, CO2 taxes, climate finance, and technology transfer. The effectiveness of these different mechanisms will be assessed in the model.

Candidates should have a master’s degree in a relevant topic.

PhD studentship in Biochemistry/Biology at Max Plank Institute

The Laboratory of “Lymphocyte Signaling and Oncoproteome” under Dr. med. Marco Herling at the Department of Internal Medicine I (Chair Prof. Dr. med. M. Hallek) at the University Hospital of Cologne, Germany, is looking for a full-time PhD student in academic cancer research starting her/his position in May – June 2009.


The position is open for a 3-4 year project on the topic of Interrogation of the contribution of TCL1 in molecular cascades of antigen receptor signaling of malignant B-cells in the context of lymphoma initiation and progression.

This work includes in vitro cell line systems, primary cell (co)cultures, and the study of engineered animals, all with respect to protein (kinase) interactions and receptor affinity.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with sufficiently practical research experience as well as theoretical background in the above field of lymphocyte cell signaling. Please refrain from applying if you can not prove experience in the above area.


The candidate should have had exposure to a broad variety of techniques in molecular biology and protein biochemistry and have aquired a strong background in immunology.


Our main focus are the mechanisms of oncogenic transformation in lymphocytes to be exploited for clinical applications in the future. Our institution is one of 4 German officially accredited Excellence Centers in Oncology. In addition, we are also part of the new CECAD initiative clustering the most renowned research teams of the Cologne Campus in the field of aging research with exclusive curricula and facilities. PhD and Postdoctoral scholarships at University of Heidelberg, Germany

The Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe’ in a Global Context: Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows” at the University of Heidelberg is offering 2 PhD scholarships (2 + 1 years) as well as 2 Post-doctoral scholarships (12 months) within the Research Project C4 “Making India a Global Health Care Destination: A Social Study of High-Tech Hospitals and Neo-Oriental Spas”, Research Area C (Health and Environment).


The candidates are expected to develop PhD or Post-doctoral projects within the Project C4’s research focus: This project addresses the fast growing sector of medical and wellness tourism in India, and attempts to understand the ways by which India is promoted as a global health care destination.


Applicants for the PhD Scholarships are required to hold a Masters degree or equivalent for less than a year. Applicants for the post-doctoral scholarships are required to hold a PhD since no longer than three years. The fellowships are opened to scholars in anthropology, cultural geography and cultural economy. PhD Scholarships at Norway

PhD Stipend Provided by the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund

The Department of International Environment & Development Studies, Noragric, invites applications from eligible candidates employed at its partner institutions in developing countries for a three-year PhD quota stipend provided by the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund. The selected candidate will carry out interdisciplinary research for the doctoral degree in one of the following thematic areas: Health and Development, Environmental Governance, or Adaptation to Climate Change.

The closing date for applications is 15 March 2009.


The applicant must have a research-based Master’s degree with a GPA of B (or its equivalent) or above in a field relevant to environment and development studies, and preferably be below 35 years of age. Ability to use English as a working language and in daily communication is a prerequisite. Previous research and working experience will also be considered in the evaluation of the applicants.

Applicants must use a prescribed application form and attach certified copies of the educational qualifications and transcripts, a letter of recommendation from the head of the partner institution in which the applicant is employed, a letter guaranteeing that if selected the applicant will have extra financial support to pay the bench fee of NOK74000, and a preliminary research proposal not exceeding 4000 words. The applicant should choose one of the three thematic areas for the preliminary research proposal.

The Quota Scheme covers living expenses while studying in Norway, travel allowances according to fixed national rates at minimum student costs and support to cover field work in the student’s home country as part of the study in Norway. Approximately 70% of the Quota Scholarship is provided as loan and 30% as a scholarship; total amount of NOK 85.000 pr. year (2008/ 2009). If the student makes satisfactory progress, the financial support will normally be renewed every year. If the student permanently settles in his/her home country after completing the degree, the loan will be waived after one year. If the student settles in another country, he/she has to repay the loan on the same conditions as Norwegian citizens. The Quota Scholarship also includes family support for living with the student in Norway. The monthly support is based on the number of children as follows: one child: NOK 1320/ months, 2 children: NOK 2640/ month, each additional child: NOK 850/ month. No support is provided for spouses solely, and no support is available to cover travel expenses for family members.

The applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their academic qualifications, the quality of the preliminary research proposal and previous research and other relevant experience. The selected candidate will be admitted to Noragric’s PhD programme, assigned to a senior scientist who will be the main supervisor, and attached to the Scientific Group to which the main supervisor belongs.

There are two Scientific Groups at Noragric: Livelihoods, Environmental Change and Globalisation, and Governance, Rights and Conflict.

Fullbright Scholarships for Pakistani Nationals

This program funds graduate study in the United States for a Master’s degree program.

The program is funded by The United States Agency for International Development (USAID). All disciplines are eligible, except for clinical medicine, with priority given to Education, Educational Management, Agriculture, Health, Teaching of English, Journalism, and fields related to economic development. Eligible candidates will have either a four-year Bachelor’s degree or a Bachelor’s and Master’s combination totaling 16 years of formal education from an accredited university. Recent graduates are strongly encouraged to apply, except for MBA applicants, who require 3 years of work experience.

Fulbright/HEC/USAID Ph.D. Scholarship
This program funds graduate study in the United States towards a Ph.D. degree. This may be coursework and/or research towards a Ph.D. or an entire program. Funding for this program is provided by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of the Government of Pakistan as well as USAID. Eligible applicants will have a Master’s, M. Phil. or comparable degree (a minimum of 18 years of formal education) from an accredited university.

Who is eligible for these scholarships?
Pakistani citizens with strong academic histories are eligible to apply.
All disciplines - Sciences, SocialSciences, Arts, Humanities, Journalism, Business, Law - are welcome to apply, except clinical medicine.

PhD Scholarships at University of Leicester

Eligibility
1. Candidates for Open Scholarships must be classified by the University as international students for fees purposes.
2. Except in the case of Open PhD Scholarships, all Open Scholarships are awarded only in the form of a reduction in tuition fees payable.
3. For Open PhD Scholarships, candidates must not be in receipt of a full scholarship (tuition fees and living costs) from any other sources. Students with partial scholarships from other sources will be considered.
4. New PhD students starting in September / October 2009
5. Where an Open Scholarship is awarded to a candidate who is also eligible for a fee discount, the discount will be calculated after the Scholarship reduction to the tuition fees payable has been made.
6. Some scholarship funding may also be available to outstanding PhD students who begin their studies at other points in the academic year.


Guidance for applicants

PhD position at Florida International University

A PhD student position is available in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Florida International University in Miami, FL. The project is estimated to last for a period of 3 years under the supervision of Professor F. Miralles-Wilhelm.

The position is funded through collaboration with the Everglades Foundation (Dr. G. M. Naja http://biosorption.mcgill.ca/home_gn/najawww.htmand R. G. Rivero http://serc.fiu.edu/rivero.php) and the FIU Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering (Dr. Miralleshttp://web.eng.fiu.edu/~miralles/fmwme/index.htm) and Economics (Dr. Bhat http://www.fiu.edu/~bhatm/).

Research groups at the FIU and in the Everglades Foundation have focused on water quality and transport modeling in the Everglades. The research project outcome will provide foundations of a regional phosphorus cap and trade policy similar to carbon emissions trading.


Qualifications: The successful multidisciplinary applicant will understand and apply engineering and economics methodologies as well as remote sensing techniques. The proposed work will focus on the application of ecological-economics approach to environmental problem-solving through offering direct incentives for decreasing the phosphorus level in the runoff using tradeable emission. The successful applicant will be using laboratory techniques and computer software for the analysis and modeling of phosphorus transport through the Northern Everglades. Field trips will be necessary to investigate the current situation. Economics courses and interests will be essential for the student. Necessary supervision (Everglades Foundation and FIU) and training will be given. The candidate must have a Master Degree in Environmental Sciences, Chemical engineering or Physical Chemistry with a strong interest in economics and modeling or other relevant education. The position requires experience in water quality analysis. The candidate will be enrolled in the PhD-program at the FIU Faculty of Engineering. The student will be part of a small and individually supervised group of PhD students and will have the opportunity to work with senior researchers from the FIU and from the Everglades Foundation (direct supervision). The student will receive a fellowship for the three years of studies.

PhD Scholarships in NanoBioTechnology at Center for NanoScience (CeNS), Munich

The International Doctorate Program “NanoBioTechnology” offers doctoral scholarships for outstanding graduate students, starting on October 1st, 2009. Successful candidates will work in the stimulating interdisciplinary environment of the Center for NanoScience(CeNS) based in Munich and become members of the Elite Network of Bavaria. The PhD students will be supervised by principal investigators of CeNS and will be affiliated with the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (LMU), the Technical University Munich (TUM) or the University of Augsburg. The recommended duration of the PhD is 3 years.

Requirements


Applicants should hold a Bachelor Degree or equivalent in either the field of physics, chemistry or life sciences and should have finished or prepare for a Master Degree in one of the same fields to be concluded no later than summer 2009. Excellent grades and a very good command of the English language are important prerequisites. We furthermore expect strong scientific motivation and interest in the activities of the doctoral program and interdisciplinary research.

Applications for the program must be submitted together with a statement of interest in one specific PhD project offered by a principal investigator of CeNS. Further PhD projects might be arranged in direct agreement with a group leader of CeNS. For your application, two letters of reference are required. Templates are available for download. PhD Scholarships in Chemical Sciences at University College London

Applications are invited for our three year research programmes leading to the degree of PhD.

The department deadline for recommending the applicants for scholarships for overseas students for 2009 entry is 1 March 2009 so you should aim to submit your application by the middle of February to give it time to be considered and processed.

Competition is extremely high for the overseas scholarships so you will need to have the equivalent of a first class honours degree from a recognized university. You should have achieved the standard level on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) which would be an overall grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each of the subtests.

The Department also makes extensive use of national and international neutron and synchrotron radiation facilities.

300 PhD scholarships in Spain

Research topics in all areas of Science and Technology including Human and Social Sciences.

The CSIC (Spanish Council for Scientific Research), the largest public research body in Spain, offers 300 grants to conduct research leading to PhD theses in the framework of its JAE Programme for doctoral research training. The Programme focuses on topics in all the areas of Science and Technology, including Human and Social Sciences. The hosting research groups belong to the CSIC´s Centres and Institutes, located in the main Spanish cities.

The grants are available for University degree holders of all nationalities. Applications from students in the last year of their University studies can be accepted. The grants provide 4 years of funding (2 years scholarship + 2 years contract). Annual stipend is € 14,400 during the 2 first years. In addition, grants cover the cost of University courses and mobility allowances to enable stays at research Institutions other than CSIC. Travel expenses (€ 1200) for residents outside Europe.

Medical insurance is fully covered by the Spanish National Health Service.

Earliest and latest possible starting dates: 1st July 2009 and 1st November 2009.
