In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, QMUL Drama was the highest-rated Drama department in the United Kingdom. We have a strong focus on the cultural politics of performance, with particular emphases on live art, applied theatre, cultural histories of performance, cultural industries, and transnational performance. We collaborate with leading arts organisations and our thriving graduate community contributes strongly to the Department's research environment. Queen Mary invests more than £1 million a year in awards to support graduate students in their study, and Drama students are an important part of the College's graduate culture.

We are pleased to offer a number of Queen Mary PhD studentship awards to full-time students, each worth more than £18,000 per year. These include tuition fee waivers (at home or overseas rate) and maintenance grants at AHRC levels. Anyone whose research can contribute to the Department's strengths in the cultural politics of performance is encouraged to apply, and we particularly welcome applications for a joint studentship (shared with the School of Business and Management) in cultural industries. Drama also anticipates being able to offer Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded PhD support once the allocations of the Block Grant Partnership are finalised in March.

PhD Studentships in School of Psychology at University of Birmingham
The School of Psychology at the University of Birmingham is the 3rd highest ranking department for research in the UK.
We seek excellent applicants for up to 10 University and Research Council funded research studentships for students wishing to start a research degree in October. The admissions process runs throughout the academic year, but we particularly encourage applications to be made by 16/03/09.
These studentships are available in any of the areas covered by the School of Psychology`s three major subject groupings:
(i) Behavioural Neuroscience (neuroimaging, neuropsychology, psychopharmacology, cognitive neurophysiology)
(ii) Developmental, Social and Applied Psychology (developmental psychology, forensic, clinical, social cognition)

PhD Studentship in Diabetes research at University College London, UK
Applications are invited from graduates in appropriate subjects or with related experience who have a strong interest in public health and epidemiology. Applicants should have (or expect to obtain) a first or upper second class degree. An MSc in a relevant subject would be an advantage. This studentship will be housed within the Health and Social Surveys Research Group in the Research Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, within the Division of Population Health. There are about 45 PhD students currently working in the Department. The Division offers a unique environment to those wishing to undertake interdisciplinary study and gain exposure to research within departments pursuing a highly acclaimed international research agenda. The Division houses five Research Departments, namely the Centre for Health Informatics and Multi-professional Education, Epidemiology and Public Health, Primary Care and Population Health, Mental Health Sciences, and Infection and Population Health.
Eligibility: This opening is for a three-year Diabetes UK research studentship. Diabetes UK studentships cover EU fees only. Applications from EU and overseas students are encouraged as, subject to a separate application process (deadline 1/3/09), alternative UCL Graduate Scholarships could cover overseas fees.
The studentship will cover EU fees and full stipend for three years. The stipend for 2009/10 is £15,000 pa, rising to £15,500 in year two and £16,000 in year three.

PhD studentships in Scotland
Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance
The Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance is a collaboration of leading Scottish Universities whose aim is to work together to consolidate and develop Scotland's position as an international research leader in computer science and informatics. As part of this, the Scottish Graduate Academy in Informatics and Computer Science offers 20 international prize studentships per year to outstanding PhD candidates.
SICSA prize studentships are worth around £18, 000 per year for 3 years. They include support for living expenses of at least £12, 940, research expenses and a contribution towards postgraduate fees at the UK standard Home/EU rate (currently £3315). Students who are not UK/EU residents must pay the higher overseas student fee of around £11,500 per year. If you are awarded a SICSA studentship, you may apply to the admitting university for additional support to cover the difference in fees. The award of a SICSA studentship does not guarantee such support.
These studentships are open to excellent students from any country. There are no residency or citizenship requirements.
We will consider applicants in any area of computer science and informatics but may give preference to students who areworking in SICSA theme areas:
Next-generation Internet
Multi-modal interaction
Modelling and abstraction
Complex systems engineering
Students must have or must expect to be awarded a 1st class honours degree or an MSc with Distinction or equivalent GPA scores. Your degree must be in a discipline that is relevant to your proposed field of research.
Applicants for international prize studentships must complete a SICSA studentship application as well as a postgraduate application to your preferred university.

PhD Position in Bioorganic Chemistry
A fully funded 36 month PhD position is available to work on “Natural product synthesis and evaluation of antimicrobial activity” as part of the Marie Curie Training Network “Red Cat“ (“Natural Products and related Redox Catalysts: Basic Research and Applications in Medicine and Agriculture”).
This project will be hosted jointly between the company ECOSpray UK Ltd. (located near Cambridge, UK) and the Division of Bioorganic Chemistry, School of Pharmacy, University of Saarland. The student will receive a generous stipend as part of an individual training and research package. The latter will allow her/him to conduct research at the host sites as well as at the RWTH Aachen (Germany). Training will be provided in research and research related matters as part of a comprehensive training programme with events held across Europe. The anticipated staring date of this project in the 1st of June 2009.
