Scholarships at University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia

INTRODUCTION
The University of New South Wales offers the following prestigious scholarships to international students of exceptional research potential to undertake a higher degree by research at the University of New South Wales in 2011

Scholarships by Aga Khan Foundation

The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies. Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year in June or July. The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master's level courses but is also willing to consider applications for PhD programmes, when doctoral degrees are necessary for the career objectives of the student. Requests will also be considered for travel and study awards for PhD students doing their research in Third World countries on topics judged to be of interest to the Aga Khan Development Network. Applications for short-term courses are not considered; neither are applications from students who have already started their course of study.


2011-12 International Scholarship Programme application cycle is now open. Applications can be obtained from AKF offices or Aga Khan Education Services/Boards in your country of current residence. Deadline for submission of application is March 31st, 2011.

Geographic Scope
The Foundation accepts applications from countries where it has branches, affiliates or other AKDN agencies which can help with processing applications and interviewing applicants. At present, these are Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique, Madagascar, France, Portugal, UK, USA and Canada.

Selection Criteria
The main criteria for selecting award winners are: l) excellent academic records, 2) genuine financial need, 3) admission to a reputable institution of higher learning and 4) thoughtful and coherent educational and career plans. Candidates are also evaluated on their extra-curricular interests and achievements, potential to achieve their goals and likelihood to succeed in a foreign academic environment. Applicants are expected to have some years of work experience in their field of interest.

Age Limit
Preference is given to students under 30 years of age.

Financial Assistance
The Foundation assists students with tuition fees and living expenses only. The cost of travel is not included in AKF scholarships. Applicants are requested to make every effort to obtain funding from other sources as well, so that the amount requested from the Foundation can be reduced to a minimum. Preference is given to those who have been able to secure some funding from alternative sources.

Loan Conditions
Half of the scholarship amount is considered as a loan, which must be reimbursed with an annual service charge of 5%. A guarantor is required to co-sign the loan agreement. The payback period is five years, starting six months after the study period funded by the Aga Khan Foundation.

Application Procedures
The application procedures of AKF's International Scholarship Programme are decentralised. Students may obtain application forms as of January 1st each year from AKF offices or Aga Khan Education Services / Boards in their countries of current residence. Completed applications should be returned to the agency from which the form was obtained, or to the address indicated on the front of the form. They should not be sent to Geneva. The deadline for submission of applications is March 31, although in certain countries internal deadlines may be earlier.

Applicants should be prepared to be interviewed by local Scholarship Committees about their financial situation, their academic performance, extra-curricular achievements and career plans. Interview reports are sent with the applications to Geneva for the final selection.

The annual Scholarship Selection Meeting takes place in late June or early July and the Aga Khan Foundation notifies all students of the outcome of their application shortly thereafter.

Scholarships in China for International Students

According to the Interim Regulations of Shanghai Government Scholarship for International Students (hereafter referred to as the Scholarship), this detailed implementation for international students in ECUST has hereby been set forth.

I. Scholarship types and numbers to be awarded
The scholarship is divided into
Type A and B

Type A, as a full scholarship, covers tuition, basic learning material, accommodation; itprovides insurance for major diseases and accidents; living allowance is offered monthly: 1700 RMB for master student and 2000 RMB for PHD student. It is awarded to
applicants for masters and above. The numbers to be awarded is 10 each year.

Type B is semi-scholarship, including tuition, basic learning material and accommodation.

It will be awarded to applicants for masters and above. The numbers to be awarded is 6 each year.

II. Qualification :
1. Citizens with foreign nationalities and in good health;
2. Abide by the Chinese government’s laws, rules and regulations and school regulatory framework;
3. Study earnestly with good results;
4. Applicants for the Doctorate program must already have a Master’s degree and be less
than 40 years old;
Applicants for a Masters Degree must already have a Bachelors degree and be less than 35 years old;

Students shall not receive other scholarships offered by Chinese government during the same period.

III. Documents required for application
1.Two copies of corresponding Application Form of Shanghai Government Scholarship forInternational Students. (The form can be downloaded from the website of IES : http://www.ies.edu.cn).
2. Notarized diploma and transcript, in notarized Chinese or English translation
3. Personal Statement with no less than 1000 words for master degree applicants and 1500 fordoctoral applicants.

Content should cover academic background, work experience, academic achievement and master or doctorate study plan, personal development goals after graduation, etc.
4. Already published paper title, abstract and other certificates and material that can attest to academic achievement and research ability;
5. Letters of recommendation from two professor or assistant professors.
6. Physical Examination Record

IV. Application time
Applicants shall apply the scholarship before May 15th every year.

V. Evaluation
Applicants should send the application materials directly to School of International Education , ECUST. IES will confirm the validity of the application material and send them to corresponding Schools for assessment and then collect them back.
The IES Student Scholarship Evaluation Committee will evaluate the application material. The evaluation results will be announced during the middle of June and the notice of receipt of Scholarship will be sent to the recipients.

VI. Registration
Recipients of the scholarship should register at the university on time otherwise the scholarship will be withdrawn and the applicant will be considered to have automatically abandoned their studies.

VII. The University will submit copies of the application material to the Shanghai Education Committee for registration one month after the evaluation.

VIII. Final interpretation of this detailed implementation is a right reserved by the International Education School Scholarship Evaluation Committee.

Scholarship for PhD in Social Sciences at University of Leicester

The Department of Sociology at the University of Leicester has a long and well-respected tradition in both teaching and research. We have ESRC 1+3 and CASE recognition for full and part time awards, and in the 2008 research assessment exercise 75% of what we submitted is judged as internationally recognised, which reflects our strengths in social theory, sport, language and interaction, gender and sexuality, health and illness, migration, political sociology and social movements and social simulation.

The department is offering one three year PhD Scholarship which provides £3,000 per annum towards fees and an annual stipend of £9,000. In order to be eligible, candidates must meet the following criteria:
Home/EU fee status.
Intending to start their PhD in July or October 2009. For each intended start date, in order to be considered for the scholarship the candidate must have provided all relevant documentation to satisfy conditions of offer (and otherwise completed all application procedures) by a date approximately two months prior to arrival. These deadline dates are therefore 1st May and 1st August 2009. There is no separate application process for the scholarship and all candidates who satisfy these conditions will be considered.

Submission of a two A4 page research proposal providing as much detail as possible about the intended research (summary of existing knowledge, research question, intended methods and so on). This proposal will form a key part of the assessment process for the scholarship and the topic of the research must be clearly relevant to the expertise of one or more members of the department who will be asked to supervise the successful applicant.

Good Masters level qualification in a relevant social science with a recognisable research methods component.

Scholarships at Ocean University of China

Autumn Semester Government Scholarship for Master and Doctoral Degree Programs in English for International Students 2009
I. Number of scholarship available: 10
II. Details of the Scholarship

Chinese Government Scholarship scheme is established to provide full scholarship to international students. Ocean University of China (hereinafter referred to as the University or OUC) is authorized to administer the recruitment of the international government scholarship students who will study in the University.

The scholarship durations are 2-3 years for master degree student and 3-4 years for doctor degree students beginning in the September of 2009 and ending in the July.

The Scholarship includes:
1. Tuition fee
2. Accommodation on campus (Note: water and electricity fee should be afforded by the student him/herself)
3. Monthly Living allowance:
- Master degree students, scholars: CNY 1,700 Yuan per month;
- Doctoral degree students, scholars: CNY 2,000 Yuan per month;
4. Medical insurance based on the stipulated insurance articles;

IV. Eligibility
1. Applicants must be non-Chinese nationals in good health.
2. Education background and age limit:
- Applicants for master degree studies must have bachelor’s degree and be under the age of 35.
- Applicants for doctoral degree studies must have master’s degree and be under the age of 40.


V. Application Materials
The applicants must fill in and provide the following materials truly and correctly (in triplicate, one original and two copies).
1. Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship (printed by CSC, please refer to File 4), one original and two photocopies, in Chinese or in English. Please read carefully the important notes on the last page before filling out the form. Please complete the form in Chinese or English. If the form is not filled in on PC, please write legibly in black or blue ink. Please indicate with ‘X’ in the blank chosen. Any forms that do not follow the notes will be invalid.

2. Notarized Copy of bachelor’s degree/master’s degree (applying doctoral degree program). If applicants are university students or already employed, they should also provide relevant documents to prove. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with translations in Chinese or English.

3. Original transcript (or a notarized copy) .Applicants for Master degree program or Doctoral degree program need to provide Original transcripts (stamped by the university). Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with translations in Chinese or English.

4. A study or research plan in Chinese or in English (no less than 800 words/ 2 pages, very important).

5. Two letters of recommendation .Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation in Chinese or English by professors or associate professors (very important).

6. CV. The CV is to introduce your education background, your experience or your publication in relative research field done before.

7. Photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form (printed by Chinese quarantine authority and only for those whose period of studies in China lasts up to six months, please refer to File 5) filled in English. The medical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, official stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. The medical examination results will be valid for 6 months. All applicants are kindly requested to take this factor into consideration while determining the time to take the medical examination. The original Foreigner Physical Examination Form will be certified by the local authorities. In the case of failure to pass certification, a new physical examination must be done at the stipulated hospitals.

8. Three photocopies of a COMMON passport (no diplomatic or service passport)
Note: Black ink pen or gel pen shall be used to fill all the forms. If any question in preparing the documents, please contact the admission office.

VI. Application Deadline
The above-mentioned materials should directly reach Ocean University of China by May 31th, 2009. Individual applications will not be accepted by CSC.

Scholarship Opportunities at University of Westminster

At the University of Westminster you can apply for a scholarship once you have been offered a place (either conditional or unconditional) on a course at the University, but before you start your course.

The only exception to this ruleis if you are an undergraduate UK/EU studentwho started your course under the new tuition fee regime.

For you, there are a number of progression scholarships awarded at the end of your first year at the University.

All other scholarships are awarded before you start your course.

Scholarships are awarded on one or more of the following criteria:
Academic excellence
Financial need
Development potential (for international students)

PhD positions Engineering Systems: Bio Engineering

The PhD Program on Sustainable Energy Systems educates a new generation of sustainability aware leaders with expertise in energy systems and economics who will generate and communicate new knowledge within academia and industry. The program combines multidisciplinary studies, in both engineering and economics domains, at the levels of energy systems analysis and conception, in the context of sustainable development with a strong emphasis on leadership and entrepreneurial activities. To successfully address these challenges, Sustainable Energy System Focus Area participants will work on the development and integration of new energy system simulation and design methodologies, including educational programs which disseminate this knowledge. Research activities will include the dynamics among energy services and supplies, including opportunities for combined heat and power and renewables in the distribution network. Advanced Study positions Engineering Systems: Bio Engineering
Designed as a first-year lecture course with innovation training and laboratory visits, this course consists of an intensive Fall semester followed by elective courses and Spring semester research initiation, collaboration and placement, and an Innovation Teams (i-Teams) project. Each student in the advanced study course follows six curricular modules (two weeks each, intensive). Four of these modules are mandatory and the two remaining requirements are electives from a selection of four modules, which may change from year to year. The modules will be held on a rotating schedule at each of the participating universities.

Master's Degree program is similar to the PhD program except that the scholarship provided is for Bachelor's Degree holdersto study for a Master¡¦s Degree (MS). Scholarship is provided for 2years of study in a Master program at National Chiao Tung Universityor National Tsing Hua University, in exchange for a work commitment toITRI following graduation of 2 years.

Scholarships in Japan by Shundou International Foundation

Self-supporting international students with nationalities other than Japanese, coming to Japan to study, and enrolled in the master’s or doctoral course of the graduate school (includes those who will be enrolled in the master’s or doctoral course in April 2009).
Requirements for Candidates:
Excellent academic record, good personality, and health.
Willingness for contribution to international understanding and friendship.
Those receiving a scholarship or will receive a scholarship are not eligible to apply.

Scholarships at University of Freiburg, Germany through Baden-Wuerttemberg Scholarship Program

University of Freiburg has revised the administration of the Baden-Wuerttemberg Scholarship Program for the upcoming academic year. This program based on bilateral agreements (not Erasmus) has proven to provide a valuable source of financial support for students with outstanding academic record in an interested academic exchange. The scholarship will cover a minimum period of four months and a maximum stay of eleven months between October 2009 and September 2010.2.

The funding level is set at:
a) up to 500 euros per month for students
b) up to 900 euros per month for PhD candidates (Values are preliminary).

The application must include:
- Completed application form
- Cover letter by the applicant (including motivation for studying abroad and to outline for the planned stay at the University of Freiburg, max. 5 pages)
- A current curriculum vitae
- A current transcript of grades
- A letter of recommendation provided by a faculty member of your institution
- A formal letter of nomination submitted by the International Office / contact person for faculty exchange of your institution
- Proof of sufficient German language skills: either Test DaF certificate, certificate by the Goethe Institute or DAAD (DAAD template of certificate may So be completed by your English teacher) - PhD., candidates must also include letters of acceptance by a faculty member of the University of Freiburg

The deadline for application submissions to the International Office at the University of Freiburg is February 1, 2009.. Late applications can not be processed.

Applications for a planned stay during the academic English summer semester 2010 (eg applications from South America, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, etc.) must be announced by that date, the complete application dossier must be submitted no later than October 31, 2009.

The applications will be processed and reviewed by the Steering Committee at the University of Freiburg in April and December, respectively. The final approval and announcements by the Baden-Wuerttemberg Foundation are expected by July 2009 and January, 2010, respectively. You will subsequently be informed of the outcome of your applications.
