Story of a Pakistani Scholar
PAKISTANI GIRL
Beenish
As I look back at my one remarkable year in the U.S., I realize how wonderful a country the U.S is and how beautiful my country Pakistan is, and though we are very different but we have more similarities. When I received the confirmation of my scholarship which was through Fulbright commission and fully funded by the U.S State department, people in Pakistan warned me about different issues. My elder brother who is in England from past three to four years warned me of racism. He told me that you are a Muslim and also a Pakistani you should be very careful as people have very negative image of us. My aunts told me how I should be careful not only with boys, but also with girls and that I should not involve myself too much with American people as they have no moral values. One of my colleagues at my bank criticized me that I am doing something extremely wrong as the U.S. is our enemy and I should reject my scholarship and become a more patriotic Pakistani. I took some of the warnings seriously, but with all excitement was ready to spend one year of my life in the U.S.
My experience turned out to be much better than I had thought of. I was welcomed in one of the community colleges in upstate NY. We were four students from Pakistan in this program. There were students also from Turkey, Indonesia, South Africa, Egypt and Brazil. We all students lived at the same dorm floor and were studying almost the same subjects. Since we were all on the same program, we all got very close to each other and learned about these countries as much as we learned about the U.S.
We were paid $ 500 each month and all other expenses such as tuition, hostel, and books were paid by the U.S. government. The purpose of this program was to let Americans know about our countries and culture and also learn about American culture. To fulfill this requirement, all students were provided an American host family. Students could live with them if they want. Mentor families were responsible of keeping the students entertained and allowed them to become a part of their family. I had a mentor family too. It was Ann Sullivan, a librarian at my college and her husband Nick, who is a professor at Cornell University. During my stay my mentor was always there for me. On weekends she took me and my other Pakistani room mate for dinners, shopping, and movies and sometimes to her home. I even stayed at her home during my winter vacations. She was very open to learn about Pakistan and Islam. She respected our values and appreciated the way we lived. I almost felt that I have an American mother and father.
Since we were also responsible to share about our country to American people, Ali, a Pakistani student from Skardu and I went to different libraries, schools, Cornell University and even to a children prison to talk about Pakistan. It was an amazing experience. People wanted to know so much about Pakistan. They were amazed to see Ali and me wearing our national dress. They wanted to know about war, Taliban, Al-Queda, how people live in Pakistan, was it safe to live there. It was very satisfying to tell them about our country and clear some of the misconceptions they had. For instance when the staff at the Children prison informed the prisoners that two speakers from Pakistan are coming to give a presentation, they told the staff we don't want any terrorists. It was funny as these were serious criminals who had murdered some one or were drug dealers. When we spoke to them about Pakistan, most of them were surprised. They were shocked to know about our strong family culture and low rate of children criminals. They also appreciated our closeness to religion and respect for elders.
During this year, I also realized the great opportunities that are available in U.S. educational institutes. At my college, I studied from very hardworking professors. The class room environment was very interactive. Students were encouraged to participate in class discussions and students felt comfortable expressing their opinions. Students had the option of choosing subjects that they wanted to study, there were also many opportunities where students could do internships in different countries. College library had a great collection of books, and students could use internet when ever they wanted.
As a part of our program, we were responsible to take a FDR (Freedom, Democracy and Responsibility) class. The purpose of this class was to let students know about American democracy, how America was formed and principles which are the base of American government. We were taken to Boston, as a part of this class. We visited all historic monuments and studied American Revolution as Boston is the city which gave birth to American Revolution against British. In this class we also learned about the civil rights war, the rights of women, and the extra-ordinary efforts of black African Americans to become an equal part of American society. It was an interesting time to be in America, as we saw a black, African American man to be elected as president of the U.S. first time ever in the history of U.S.
I found American society to be extremely tolerant of diversity. This country has people from all over the world and of all religions. I saw many Muslim women covering their heads and working freely without fear of being a target of racist comments. During my stay I traveled to may places in the U.S. and met many American people and no one judged me because I was a Pakistani or a Muslim. There are problems but they are because of our governments and not people. American people like us don't want war and killing of innocent people. My perception of U.S society has changed. I wish both Americans and Pakistani's could experience what I did. We need more such programs where young people can learn on their own and not form assumptions based on what is taught to us.

Post-graduate Scholarships at University of Amsterdam
The Amsterdam Merit Scholarships (AMS) have specifically been designed by the Universiteit van Amsterdam to offer talented and hard-working non-EU/EEA students the opportunity to pursue a degree in one of the academic fields covered by the UvA. The AMS programme is highly selective: only applicants with excellent study results and motivation may receive a scholarship.
Eligibility
Applicants to one of the English-taught, selective Master's programmes of the Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS) must meet the eligibility criteria in order to be considered for the AMS scholarship.
The applicant should:
hold non-EEA nationality or nationalities only
not be entitled to receive a Dutch study grant or loan ("Studiefinanciering")
not be eligible to pay the reduced tuition fee rate for EEA students at the UvA
not receive a full coverage scholarship for the same period of study as the AMS scholarship
have submitted a complete application to one of the English-taught, selective Master’s programmes of the GSSS
have been (or will be) admitted to one of the English-taught, selective Master’s programmes of the GSSS
be enrolled at the time of receipt of the scholarship as a full time student in one of the English-taught, selective Master's programmes offered by the GSSS
be able to comply with the conditions to obtain a Dutch visa (if applicable)
demonstrate a financial need
Failure to meet one or more of these criteria automatically means that the student is not eligible for an AMS scholarship.
Selection criteria
We have a limited number of scholarships. The best eligible candidates are selected for a scholarship on the basis of the following criteria:
Their academic excellence and promise in the proposed field, as evidenced by their academic records, letters of recommendation, written work and/or publications and their proposed research questions;
The quality of their letter of motivation.
How to apply?
Applicants wishing to apply for an AMS scholarship should include their application for the scholarship in their application file for the Master's programme of their choice. Your application for the scholarship should contain the following documents:
Motivation letter for the scholarship
A comprehensive financial plan that shows expected income from all sources and all costs, to provide insight in the additional funds needed from a scholarship in order to finance participation in the Master's programme.
A research proposal, detailing your areas of interest and what you wish to research during your time at the GSSS.
When to apply?
Applications for an AMS scholarship should be submitted before 1 April when enrolling in September. For students wishing to start their studies in February, the deadline is 1 August.
Selection
Only students who have been admitted to one of the English-taught, selective Master's programmes of the GSSS can be awarded a scholarship. Students are selected on the basis of academic merit. Selection will take place in May and again in October. Applicants will be informed before the end of May or October.
The scholarship
The scholarship consists of € 6,000, € 9,000 or € 12,000, but awards are based on the comprehensive financial plan, which should demonstrate the extent of the need for additional funding. Please note that the scholarship cannot be used as a (partial) tuition waiver. The applicant must still pay the full amount of tuition due. Scholarship holders will receive their grant in monthly instalments.
Conditions
Amsterdam Merit Scholarships are only awarded to applicants who have been admitted to one of the English-taught, selective Master's programmes of the GSSS upon enrolment. A scholarship granted for one academic year cannot be transferred to another academic year. Students who are granted an Amsterdam Merit Scholarship are required to assent to the conditions applying to the scholarship in writing before the scholarship will be remitted.

Undergraduate Scholarships at University of Adelaide, Australia

A scholarship recipient completing a three year degree program who is offered a further year in the Honours Program may apply for an extension of the scholarship to cover that year. Scholarships are available only for the first four years of a double degree. Applications
For students seeking scholarships for study commencing in 2010, a separate application process for scholarships will be required. This includes for applications submitted through the South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC).
The process will require completion of a web-based form that will be available on this website by mid-September 2009. Applicants will be required to have already received a current offer of admission to the University of Adelaide to be considered for a scholarship.
For further information about international undergraduate scholarships and programs, please contact one of the University of Adelaide’s International Representatives.
Application Deadlines
The deadline for the 2010 round of undergraduate scholarships has yet to be fixed. Please remember that to be considered for a scholarship for 2010 entry, you must have an offer from the University of Adelaide for entry into an academic program for 2010 at the time of application for the scholarship. It is therefore recommended that you apply to study at the University some time before the estimated mid-September opening of the scholarship round.AOASI Scholarship ConditionsEligibility conditions Scholarships will be awarded strictly on academic merit and only actual results can be used. Forecast results are not accepted for scholarship selection.
Only complete applications will be considered, and only applicants who have met the University’s minimum English language requirement for direct entry to their intended program of study at the scholarship application deadline will be eligible for consideration. For Australian Year 12 students the basic TER will be used. Bonus points will not be counted. The University reserves the right to vary the awards, or not to offer scholarships if the candidates have not achieved the level of academic achievement to merit the awards. Applicants from education systems accepted by the University of Adelaide for direct entry to the first year of degree studies must apply before commencement of University studies whether in their home country or Australia. Those who have commenced tertiary studies at the time of application will not be eligible. Applicants from education systems where one year of degree studies in their home countries is required for admission to the University of Adelaide first year degree studies must apply before commencement of their second year of studies. Those who have commenced second year studies at the time of application will not be eligible. A scholarship may not be awarded to anyone already holding another scholarship funded by the University of Adelaide. Citizens and Permanent Residents of Australia, and citizens of New Zealand are ineligible for any of the above scholarships.
Candidates who have applied for Australian permanent resident status are ineligible to apply. Enrolment Conditions Scholarship holders must commence study at The University of Adelaide in 2010. By negotiation, an applicant offered a scholarship scheduled to commence in Semester I, 2010 may defer until Semester II, 2010 if there is a Semester II commencement of their chosen program of study. If the applicant is not able to commence in Semester II the scholarship offer will lapse and will not be available to the applicant in 2011. Candidates are required to enrol in The University of Adelaide as ‘international students’ and must maintain ‘international student’ status for the duration of their enrolment in the University. The scholarship will be terminated if a student changes their residency status. Scholarship holders are expected to enrol in a full time load. A scholarship holder who is considering reducing his/her enrolment load must first consult with staff in the International Student Centre. International students are expected to complete their programs within the duration specified on their visa. The University may only extend the duration of study under compassionate or compelling circumstances. Undergraduate scholarships are available for up to four years, subject to satisfactory progress. The University reserves the right to terminate scholarships of students who do not maintain satisfactory progress. Satisfactory progress is defined as the achievement of a GPA (Grade Point Average) of 5 (out of 7). Where a student fails, or withdraws from courses in a given semester (or equivalent teaching period) such that the semester GPA (Grade Point Average) is less than 5.0 in two consecutive semesters, the student will be deemed to have failed to maintain satisfactory academic progress and the scholarship will be terminated unless the University is satisfied that exceptional circumstances exist. If a student faces exceptional circumstances requiring him or her to return home, he/she may apply for a one year deferment of enrolment without loss of scholarship, provided this is approved under the student visa requirements.
In order to make a case for exceptional circumstances, a student will need to provide a detailed statement and independent supporting documentation e.g. a doctor’s certificate etc. If a scholarship holder enrols in more than the standard load of 24 units per year, or in courses which increase the tuition fee beyond what is indicated in the scholarship offer letter, or enrols in courses at another institution, he or she shall be responsible for the payment of the additional tuition fees. Students who complete a three-year degree may apply for an additional year, in an Honours program, but extension of the scholarship for the fourth year is subject to the decision of the relevant faculty. The scholarships cover the amount of tuition fee indicated in the scholarship award letter for up to four years of study at the University of Adelaide. The scholarships do not cover the costs of visas, Overseas Student Health Cover, travel, accommodation, living expenses, books and study materials or any other expenses associated with living in Adelaide or study at the University of Adelaide.

International Class' Scholarships
Designed and led by Institute director Lois Holzman, the program provides a unique opportunity for practitioners and scholars from the US and countries around the world to study together, learn the Institute's cutting edge developmental methodology, and build ties and support for themselves and their communities. A creative playground and postmodern academy, participants create a dynamic zone of development in which they can engage the philosophical, political and psychological questions emerging from their practice.

Residencies. The International Class comes together at the Institute three times during the academic year (two five-day and one ten-day residency period) to work together as a group with Institute faculty and associates. Site visits, observations, participant observations and experiential learning activities supplement daily seminar activity. At Home . In between residencies, students study the social therapeutic method in relation to socio-cultural activity theory, theories of performance, postmodernism, group process, and community development.
Learning formats include on-line seminars, mentoring, dialogues with guest colleagues of the Institute and supervision--and conference calls with faculty and mentors. The International Class is cross-disciplinary and open to practitioners and scholars with broad range of educational and life experiences--and a passion for innovation. Making KEMU a college again | PU okays syllabus changes
All political parties supported upgrading the King Edward Medical College (KEMC) to a university, and again converting it into a college would be a strange decision, KEMU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Zafarullah Khan said on Monday. He was addressing a gathering of students and doctors at the KEMU campus. He said the institute was given the status of a university in 1999, and all political parties had welcomed the decision. "A middle school can be made high school, a college can be made a university, but making a university into a college is strange," the VC said. He said Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was being given invalid information regarding the KEMU. The VC also urged the students to raise their hands if they wanted KEMU to retain the status of a university. The entire student body raised its hands before dispersing peacefully. Khan said the university was providing transport, clean water and girls' hostels to the students for the first time. He said the university's first convocation in December 2008 was marked by the prime minister's visit, when he offered to resolve any problems the university was facing. He said the only demand put before the prime minister was construction of female hostels. Daily Times
KEMU status to be ratained: CMLahore: Punjab Chief Minister, Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that present status of King Edward Medical University will be maintained and it will be made a best university. He also directed to constitute a high level committee for this purpose which will submit its recommendations within two weeks for making King Edward Medical University a prestigious university of the world. This was decided in a meeting held regarding KingEdward Medical University at Chief Minister's Secretariat, here today, which was also attended by MNA Sardar Ayyaz Sadiq, Secretary Health, Dr. Amir Aziz, Vice Chancellor, professors, senior teaching staff and students. Addressing the meeting, the Chief Minister said that King Edward Medical College had an important place in the world and this college produced prominent doctors who are rendering their services throughout the world. He said that now King Edward Medical University should be given the same status as was acquired by this college and in this regard it is the responsibility of Vice Chancellor, Principal, Medical Superintendent and all other concerned staff to take all possible measures for granting it status of best university of the world. He said that a committee is also being constituted for making the performance of King Edward Medical University exemplary which will review all aspects regarding improvement of university and will submit its comprehensive recommendations in this regard. Earlier, participants of the meeting, teaching staff and students informed about their suggestions. F.P. Report
KEMU VC shows medics the doorLahore: An unpleasant and embarrassing situation was created when King Edward Medical University (KEMU) Vice Chancellor Monday humiliatingly asked Principal Allama Iqbal Medical College and president KEMColian International Forum Prof Dr Javed Akram, Dr Amir Aziz and some other prominent doctors to leave the King Edward Medical College building. The doctors, mostly against giving King Edward Medical College a university status, went to KE to attend an emergency meeting convened to deliberate upon the varsity issue.
The KEMColian office bearers, former senior teachers and students gathered in front of the VC office and registered their strong protest against the varsity VC and administration. The media men invited to cover the proceeding of the meeting too were asked to leave the institute. It is worth-mentioning that KEMColian is a body of former and present students of KEMC. This body recently had elected Dr Javed Akram elected its president.
The Saturday's incident also drew new line between the medical community, brought the pro-varsity and anti-varsity groups face to face.Soon after the incident, the situation got worsened when students from the both sides came face to face and exchanged hot words blaming the seniors of each other's group for the unpleasant happening. The matter was, however, resolved on the intervention of the senior doctors when the clash was imminent.
KEMColian president Prof Dr Javed Akram, senior vice president Prof Dr Amir Aziz, Prof Dr Amjad and a large number of former medical teachers including Prof Mahmood A Malik, Prof Ghulam Sarwar, Prof Abdul Aziz, and scores of students later gathered outside the VC office and addressed a press conference against Vice Chancellor Prof Zafar Ullah Khan.
Addressing the newsmen, Dr Javed said that they were invited by Prof Zafar Ullah Khan as guests to attend a joint meeting in which the present and former students and doctors of the university have been invited to discuss the issue of varsity status for the premier medical institute.
He said he along with other doctors was waiting for the commencement of the meeting at Council Room when Vice Chancellor, KEMU appeared there and asked them to leave the place immediately.
Dr Javed told when Dr Zafar Ullah was asked why he was asking them to leave the place, he responded: "I will not allow anybody to talk to the media men without seeking prior permission from me. Being head of the institute I have the right only to talk to the newsmen on the issue."
Prof Javed said that it was perhaps the first incident ever occurred in the history of the KEMU when a VC humiliated most respectable medical teachers including Prof Mahmood A Malik. He said the way the VC tried to disgrace the senior medical teachers and the students was not tolerable at all.
Addressing on the occasion, Prof Mahmood A Malik, KEMColian pattern in-chief, criticized Dr Zafar saying it is a very shameful attitude shown towards medical teachers by a VC.
Prof Dr Amir Aziz and Prof Amjad told the newsmen that Prof Zafar Ullah himself invited them in the meeting as guests late night on Sunday. They said that an emergency meeting was convened on Sunday night in which the VC requested them their support for university and also pledged his support in favour of the restoration of KEMC too.
As soon as they reached the university, they said, Dr Zafar Ullah Khan taking 'U-Turn' from his stance and without any reason asked them to leave the institute.
"His act is highly condemnable", they said and added, "They would take up the issue with the Chief Minister".
Interestingly, some professors of the KEMU including Prof Dr Arshad Cheema were also present at the Press conference in the support of the KEMColian office bearers. The same professors were earlier the supporter of Dr Zafar on the KEMU issue. Medical Superintendent Mayo Hospital Dr Zahid Pervaiz was also among the victims and attended the Press conference held in protest against the VC's attitude. The Nation
Former KEMU students criticise VCLahore: KEMC (a union of former KEMU students) on Monday criticised the King Edward Medical University (KEMU) vice chancellor for holding a 'political' procession by suspending the classes and forbidding paramedical staff from performing their duties.
KEMC President Dr Javed Akram, Dr Amir Aziz, Dr Sarwar Chaudhary, Dr Salman Kazmi, Dr Amjad, and others strongly criticised the KEMU VC for bringing out students from their classes and holding a procession in the Library Hall. They demanded that the college should be restored for under-graduate students and the KEMU should work on research and post-graduate projects. Daily Times

Contributed by M. Kamal Khan
“We have a new teacher having fervent propensity for education and research with an excellent command on English language”, once said one friend of mine from Telecom Engineering Department, BUITEMS. In fact he was pointing to newly inducted Faisal Ahmed Khan Kakar, an Assistant Professor presently Chairing Dept. of Telecom Engineering. After few causeries with the erudite professor I found my friend’s appraisal absolutely right.
Having received his bachelor and master from Bahria University, the professor further endeavors to supplement his studies. His excellent acads with a research publication at an IEEE conference at Loughborough University, in addition to his leadership and problem-solving abilities, assisted him in wining the noble Fulbright Scholarship. He will be departing for commencing his PhD studies at prestigious Georgia Institute of Technology, USA in August, 2009.
With an eloquent style, the academician enjoys guiding students, irrespective of their subject areas and problems’ nature. In a university with plenty of educatees striving for boosting their GPA’s as the solitary object of studies, he is found encouraging them about getting acquainted with the research culture. The professor has a profound love for his home-soil and is gravely committed to improve the level of education there. He preferred serving the academia over a remunerative job offer and aims to establish a modern research facility at his parent institute, BUITEMS, upon completion of PhD studies.
In the end, “Wish you best of luck Sir!”
